Who Can Order and Look at Your Credit Report?


A credit bureau may provide information about you only to people with a valid need -- usually to consider an application with a creditor, insurer, employer, landlord, or other business. There are limited circumstances under which a credit bureau may furnish consumer credit reports. These permissible purposes are:

  • Connection with credit transactions

  • Connection with collection transactions

  • For renting or leasing a house or apartment

  • For the underwriting of insurance

  • For the determination of a consumer's eligibility for a license

  • Other creditors who want to offer you pre-approved credit

  • An employer who wishes to extend an offer of employment

  • A potential investor in assessing the risk of a current obligation

  • Other credit reporting agencies to process a report for you

  • Your existing creditors to monitor your credit activity


Other legitimate business transactions initiated by you. The companies order to review an account to determine whether you continue to meet the terms of the account such as mortgage, loans, and credit card:

  • Court orders meeting specific requirements

  • At the your written instruction

  • Signed consent for employment purpose

  • Apply a loan

  • Apply for a credit card

  • Apply for mortgage loan

  • Renting a house or apartment


You can limit "prescreened" offers of credit and insurance you get based on information in your credit report. Unsolicited "prescreened" offers for credit and insurance must include a toll-free phone number you can call if you choose to remove your name and address from the lists these offers are based on. You may opt-out with the nationwide credit bureaus at 1(888)5OPT-OUT or 1(888)567-8688.
